Oxazepam and an extract of kava roots were compared for their effects on memory. Behavior and event-related potentials (ERP) were assessed in a recognition memory task. Kava produced a slightly increased recognition rates and a larger ERP difference between old and new words; oxazepam, a lowered recognition rate and lower ERP difference. For memory effects, kava produced slightly better – god (compared to placebo) effects. Oxazepam, however, slowed reaction, reduced correct answer responses, and did not enhance memory as compared to placebo. Reference:Freedman, Lynda W, PhD et al.
